Reproduisant l\u2019accord du violon, elle comporte l\u2019\u00e9chelle de trois octaves plus un ton (ou quatre octaves plus un ton). Son \u00e9criture musique est en cl\u00e9 de sol, alors que celle de l\u2019alto est en cl\u00e9 d\u2019ut. Le son de cet instrument est doux et harmonieux. Il en existe en France une dizaine d\u2019exemplaires seulement. C\u2019est la v\u00e9ritable contrebasse des orchestres \u00e0 plectre. Vu sa raret\u00e9, il est assez souvent remplac\u00e9 par la contrebasse qui a le m\u00eame accord. Le premier mandolone f\u00fbt fabriqu\u00e9 en 1747 par C.
